She folded her hands on her stomach, her feet flat on the ground and her knees drawn up a little, and studied the swaying branches, loving the way the sun turned what were already pretty leaves into brightly colored, shining gems. It was like looking into a box of emeralds, rubies, amber, and quartz, all glowing in the sunlight.
"What a gorgeous afternoon." She closed her eyes and let the sun warm her face. There was something about Hitch that was so relaxing and peaceful. He was completely unpretentious, and valued honesty and generosity above everything else. She couldn't imagine him ever being horrible to anyone. Even when that girl had teased him about being privileged all those years ago, he'd spoken heatedly, but not at her, more to the world in general. He didn't bear grudges, and he was the most forgiving person she'd ever met. She felt no pressure to put on airs or graces, or to pretend to be anything she wasn't. She loved him dearly, and bore him a deep affection she felt for no other man save her father.
Was it just familial affection? She could feel him beside her, his upper arm brushing hers as he moved the camera. If she opened her knees a little, her thigh bumped his. She wanted to do that, to keep touching him, to feel him against her. It comforted her, warmed her through. Was that odd? Would she have felt the same if Liam lay there, or Rhett? Almost certainly not. With Liam, or Rhett, or Gene, she would have felt tongue-tied, awkward, self-conscious. She wouldn't have felt this inner glow in her stomach, this urge to reach out and brush her hand against his.
He shifted beside her, his movement betrayed by the rustle of leaves. Changing the angle of his shot again, no doubt. She remained where she was, imagining herself sinking into the forest floor, becoming a part of it, being absorbed by it. She thought she could remain there forever, watching the world go by, changing the color of her coat and growing, fading, and then growing again with each turn of the seasons, with Hitch by her side.
A shadow fell across her face, and something touched her lips.
For the briefest of seconds she thought it was a leaf or--horror of horrors--an insect like the weta, but as her eyelids sprung open, the pressure on her lips increased a fraction, and she realized Hitch was kissing her.
She inhaled sharply, her heart shuddering to a stop. His lips were dry and firm, just a whisper across her own, pressing softly once, twice, and a longer third time before he lifted his head.
