I am a CPA and an Excel power user. I feel strongly about being "Fair" with my review. I made the mistake of buying "Power Pivot and Power BI: The Excel User's Guide to DAX, Power Query, Power BI & Power Pivot in Excel 2010-2016" as the first book to learn Power Queries and Power Pivot. While it's not a bad book, I found the "Learn to Write DAX" to be a much better book. It is much better at explaining the basics of how to use Power Pivots. If I had to do over again, I would buy "M is for (Data) Monkey" first. It's an excellent book. Power Queries are needed to bring data into Excel before creating Power Pivots. I would buy "Learn to Write DAX" second, also an excellent book. I've read all of these books twice.
I use Microsoft Excel everyday and consider myself a power user. I was not aware of the impact and how easy power pivot made my job and creating beautiful dashboards in BI with things that took hours to now minutes. This book took me on journey of teaching me things at my own pace and displaying the examples so anyone can follow.GREAT BOOK
I have read the "first half" of this book at least 6 times now! Every time I read it, I got a little farther in my understanding and ability to use the concepts in my everyday work. Just today, after owning the book for almost 2 1/2 years and using it repeatedly as a reference guide, I finished the entire book with full understanding. Learning how to write DAX in Power Pivot has transformed my work, and this book has been my steady number one go-to reference among several books on Power BI that I have ordered over 2 1/2 years.I decided to write a review today, because I want to share how important it is to take this in small pieces, and really use the power of self-discovery for many of the lessons in Rob and Avi's book. The book is very well written, in easy conversational tone, yet some of the concepts are very hard to grasp, and require lots of hands-on absorption to really understand. I now have a solid 2 1/2 years of intensive hands-on data modelling in Power Pivot under my belt. I have attended public classes, worked with a consultant on a big Power BI project, watched many you-tube videos, read and written blogs, and I even host a couple of Power BI user groups at my office. And yet STILL today, as I read all the way to the end of the book with full understanding for the first time, I caught some new concepts and had to think about it and absorb. This is a both a book for beginners, and it is a book for advanced users to absorb over time. I can't recommend it highly enough.
If you need to learn POWER BI - this is the book to read. Well written. Concise and precise explanations. Well illustrated. Clear, televant, excellent graphics. Complete explanations - unlike other similar books on the subject which cover the subject in very haphazardly and fail to provide clear instructions.
Early on the book indicates that you can turn away now and would be completely fine with the knowledge received. I would admit that at this point a lot of the content felt familiar as being a dabbler in Power Pivot but man am I glad I kept reading. Everything after those words I would describe as being turned up to 11. The content was fantastic throughout but the later chapters really drove home the mindset when approaching calculations in your data models. In order to dive even deeper into the concepts I'm adding the Power Pivot Pro blog to my must read list as well. 11/10 would recommend.
I've been using Power BI for about a year, and this is the first book I've read for it - I picked up a handful of concepts that have been very useful. Useful enough that I'm going to go back over it a 2nd time now.If I compare it to other Power BI Books - well I don't know, like I said this is the first I've read on this subject!If I compare it to other educational books I've read - it's great! Maybe Power BI is just a really easy subject to write on...I kinda doubt that though.
Wow! This book is absolutely wonderful. The authors provide an in depth explanation of how and why Power Pivot and Power BI work. Nice layout of the material, examples, pictures, and explainations. This takes my data crunching and reporting to a new level. This is a highly recommended book. It is not for the beginner, but more for the moderate to advanced users; some basic understanding of pivot tables, formulas, and data analysis would be suggested.
Definitely a must read for the new world of reporting. I have 10+ year working in Fiance and DAX is revolutionizing the way we work. It is just amazing the power of this new engine. Power Pivot and Power BI from Rob and Avichal is fantastic guide to start get familiarized with the most important features of DAX and PBI. Easy to understand and well structured, the book has been a important support for me in my day-to-day modeling and reporting tasks. You do not need to be a expert in Excel, SQL or VBA to get plenty of advantage of what the Authors introduce here. I have read the book the first time in one row but I keep this always with me. I have the E-book what is a an advantage. I strongly recommend together with Rob's blog powerpivotpro.com.
